More Than Fitness Equipment: A Playground For Movement
Our Personal Training Station is one of the most versatile pieces of equipment you can add to your home. The exercise possibilities are vast — and with a little creativity, they expand even further.
Adults often see stall bars as structured fitness equipment that supports their movement journey. But kids see something completely different.
They see endless possibilities for fun.
Climbing, swinging, jumping, hanging upside down, and creating games we would never think of.
They don’t see a piece of workout equipment — they see a playground.
With a little guidance and proper safety, this type of play becomes incredibly valuable. It helps develop body awareness, strength, courage, and confidence — all through movement that feels natural and fun.
My 4-year-old son started climbing the vertical rungs when he was 3. Now at 4, he’s progressed to climbing up, transitioning to the pull-up and dip bar (pd bar), and swinging confidently. He even climbs on the arms of the pd bar — not limited by strict views of how equipment “should” be used, but guided by his imagination.

Any time kids are using stall bars, we recommend:
-
Adult supervision
-
Provide spotting when needed
-
Use of mats whenever possible
-
Secure bottom support with Velcro strap
Mats are especially helpful — not just for safety, but for confidence. When kids feel safe, they’re more willing to explore, try new things, and challenge themselves.
In our house, we have a simple rule: Dad has to be present when using the stall bars.
Using play as the foundation for movement allows kids to do hard and sometimes scary things in a way that feels exciting instead of intimidating.
And that’s where real growth happens.

Physical Therapy Practice Spotlight: ScoliSource
ScoliSource, founded by Rosemary Carvajal, PT, DPT in Long Branch, NJ, is a scoliosis-specific physical therapy practice focused on individualized care for children, adolescents and adults. Using Physiotherapeutic Scoliosis-Specific Exercise (PSSE) approaches including Rigo Concept BSPTS and SEAS- internationally recognized scoliosis-specific exercise approaches- treatment is tailored to each patient’s curve pattern, goals, and stage of care.
A Thoughtful, Intentional Setup
ScoliSource was intentionally built within a home-based setting, emphasizing that high-level scoliosis care does not require a large clinic space. Instead, the focus is on specialized training and experience, intentional design, and creating an environment that supports detailed work and patient understanding.
Integrating the Stall Bars
The Beyond Balance Stall Bars (also referred to as a “Schroth” ladder or Swedish ladder) is a central part of treatment at ScoliSource. It is used to guide, teach, and progress scoliosis-specific exercises in a way that is both precise and accessible to patients.
In practice, the ladder is used to:
-
Facilitate three-dimensional postural correction
Helping patients achieve elongation, derotation, and expansion specific to their curve pattern -
Enhance proprioceptive feedback
Allowing patients to better feel and understand their corrections in real time -
Support individualized exercise progression
Moving from initial positioning and awareness to more advanced functional integration -
Bridge clinic work to home practice
Making key concepts more tangible, repeatable, and easier to carry over outside of sessions
ScoliSource highlights how tools like the Stall Bars can be effectively incorporated into smaller clinical spaces through their intentional design and efficient setup. This tool allows for the delivery of highly specialized, scoliosis-specific care without requiring a large or complex environment.Treating the Whole Patient
ScoliSource works with patients across all stages of care, including newly diagnosed children and adolescents, adults managing progression or pain, and individuals preparing for, or recovering from surgery. Care is collaborative and education-driven, with an emphasis on helping patients understand their condition and feel confident managing it over time.
A note from the owner, Dr. Rosemary Carvajal, PT, DPT:
ScoliSource was created from both clinical passion and personal experience. After being diagnosed with scoliosis at a young age and going through bracing and spinal fusion surgery, I was drawn to specialize in scoliosis care. That journey ultimately led me to create a practice dedicated to helping others feel more informed, supported, and confident in managing their spine.
